I bought a blank Volks 12" excellent base B dollfie to customize into a robot girl. I have a special spraypaint that will bond to plastic, so painting her body silver doesn't worry me. However, what I want to know is, will paperclay stick to hard plastic? I want to add on some details, and I can't use Sculpey because it requires baking which would ruin the doll it's attached to.

Will Sharpie paint markers stick to a doll head? Or does it rub off? I'm probably going to use acrylic paint just to be sure it stays on, but Sharpie paint markers would be easier to use.

Also... and this is a little weird to ask, but... can the hard plastic nipples be sanded down to make them less noticeable through clothing? Or would it look even stranger then?

Finally, does anyone know where I can order a very simple custom dollfie outfit for around $20 or less? I need a retro, one-color long-sleeved jumpsuit for the specific character but I don't want to pay Setsuna Kou $50 for something so simple.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

I can't answer most of your questions, but as for Sharpie I would think it would be fine if you used a sealant afterward. I'm trying to get into doll customizing myself and I've mostly seen people use acrylic paint with sealant, so I can't see any reason why Sharpie wouldn't work as well.

I was shocked to see someone on the Monster High LJ community who customized her dolls with colored pencils. If that worked (with a sealant, of course), I'm sure Sharpie would, and that would be great for greater precision on small things like eyelashes.

Hmm, I might actually give colored pencils a try. The problem with Sharpies is that once the ink is on, it stays on forever.

^ Looks nice, tho the original color seems to be exposed at the hip joints - you may need a very fine brush to paint those parts. :)

I tried to take the legs off to do that since otherwise I can't reach there, but the legs are pretty well stuck on and I don't wanna break it. :(

I'd thought about that, too, but didn't suggest it for the very same reason - that's why my suggesting to use a very fine brush to reach the surface of those parts.

Another option would be to spray the paint into those parts. :)

To be honest, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and I don't want to risk messing it up. ^_^' I got lucky that the spraypaint didn't drip 'cause I made the coat too thick. I also got lucky that the joints can be moved without chipping or peeling the paint.
Some of the problem is caused by the flash of the camera. You can't actually see the original color much at all in real life.

I plan on commissioning someone to make her trademark yellow 80's jumpsuit. Anyone got any suggestions on who to go to for that? Setsuna Kou's stuff is getting too expensive for me. ^_^'

Ah, yeah, could be just the reflection of the color of those hidden unpainted areas on the painted areas, caused only by the camera flash. :)

BTW guys, this wasn't my first attempt at making a robot doll. This was just my first successful attempt. I made another one years ago. And boy, do I wish I hadn't.

Behold; the Barbie abomination from cyber-hell! XD I put her next to the *good* attempt just so you can appreciate how utterly, truly, magnificently horrible the Barbie one looks.

Hey guys, I'm resurrecting this topic because I plan on making a Volks 1/6 scale dollfie of Noa from Skydoll once the parts arrive in the mail. This time I'm using glass eyes and real lashes.

Now I know that Krylon paints for plastic work on the Volks dollfie bodies, as I've done it before. I'm pretty sure it'll work on the specific head I'm using too, since it's a type of plastic I *think* is compatable with white Krylon. The head is urethane, I think. Has anyone tried painting urethane before using Krylon? Obviously I'll be painting it before I add the eyes and lashes. If it rubs/flakes off, I'll have to find another painting method.

Here's the character I'm making. The ears will be made of Sculpey.

Since my first post, I've actually made some custom MH dolls, whoo  Those dolls' heads are made out of vinyl rather than hard plastic, so the Krylon wouldn't dry, not sure if it's the same for urethane. I just got some Vinyl dye (meant for customizing car interiors) instead. It works on the hard plastic, too, so everything matches.

Here are two I've done using this method (their hair is made with Crayola modeling clay, lmao)

Cool, thanks. :) Can I get vinyl dye at Walmart? And is it spray-on, or hand-painted?

EDIT: Never mind, just ordered some. :)

I like the look of that character - can't wait to see how you'll render it.

Well, the dye worked... just not very well. =/ It got runny and drippy, so the outcome is less than perfect. But it's decent, I guess...

Sorry the dye didn't work well :( I've noticed it kind of drips, so I turned them upside down so the drip zone was on the back of their heads. I forgot about it because I covered it with their hair

Here are some crappy photos of what I have so far. Noa is almost done, and I've just started on Moira from "Roots Search." I used a different technique for painting Moira's face; I used ballpoint pens and then sealed everything with clear nail polish. There's a sheer glittery gold coating over her eyes too, but the photo sucks.
