Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can give me some information on how cosplay and anime conventions work. I only returned to watching anime two years ago after losing interest 10-15 years prior. While living closest to New York, I would probably be interested more in Metrocon as I have family outside of Tampa and would be interested in spending a day with them, as well as enjoying the hotter weather there for a few days, and Metrocon advertises a skybridge for walking between the hotel and the convention.

I'm not familiar with any anime groups in my area, and friends interested in anime and manga have since moved and I lost contact with them. So I was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction.

Thank you!

I'm curious here. What do you mean "how cosplay and conventions work"?

Meaning I know nothing about them.

I'd say it works just like any other fan convention, doesn't it?

It's a bit like Halloween...

You dress up as your favourite Anime, Cartoon, TV etc. characters as good as you can (it doesn't need to look perfect, except maybe if you're planning to participate in a real competition with prize money and the like, then you're probably required to make up and tailor everything by yourself instead of buying pre-fabricated sets). All it takes is that you try your best and put your heart in it (I think I already said that somewhere else).

Usually, it's meant just for the fun of it, so you don't necessarily need to possess Model proportions (Just look at all these photographs across the Internet)

Seriously, have you never been to a Con before?

Hm.

I have never been to any conventions and know nothing about cosplays, but I wonder if people would buy a line of clothes influenced by Sailor Moon if I chose to design them. I have the means.

I only started being interested in anime two years ago, after almost 15 years of forgetting about it

There's not a whole lot to cosplay, ultimately it's playing dress-up and going out in public.

Having said that there are varying types of cosplay, from shop brought costumes through to hand crafting your own.

It's fun to do, and it can be even more fun as part of a group when you work to a theme. A few friends & I went to our local con last year with Star Wars as our theme, so between the four of us we had a jedi, a sith, a jawa and a Han Solo

What are the stores people use (for shop bought)?

Amazon has a surprise range of passable costumes (that where I got my Han Solo from), and even the generic costumes are workable for the base of building something more elaborate with.
It's also worth looking to see if you have any costume/fancy dress stores in your area.
