You mean classic (old) literature, or all American literature in general? What is wrong with The Last of the Mohicans?

I'm almost done reading In Order To Live by North Korean defector Yeonmi Park. Next on my list is A Frozen Heart.

Do you collect materials for PhD in Russian literature? ;)

I couldn't imagine anyone reading something like this at her own will ^_^
Mandatory writer in the ideologized school program in ussr (now mostly forgotten); one of his second-line books...

Seriously? :) I first listened to the story via an app (радиоспектакль), and loved it so much I decided to read the whole thing. I thought it was a really charming story. I was disappointed it was such a short one. I also love how Gorky describes Poles. So spot-on. I've just read <<На Дне>> and have a few more queued by the same author.

I now started reading a collection of "Jewish Literary Fairy-tales" translated from Yiddish.

I love books about North Korea, btw. I haven't read the one you mentioned because I've been disappointed by most accounts of defectors so I kinda gave up on them. But I really loved Jenkins' very simply written story of the 4 American soldiers that defected to North Korea titled "The Reluctant Communist".

Cute Pretty Kitty, thank you for your openhearted and charming answer =^_^=

Reading Nabokov implies fluency in Russian, he's a severe writer even in Russian for native Russians. Would you allow to write you in Russian (e.g. PM)?

I read two other defector books before this one and I have to say that the first one was my favourite. I would have to read that book you mentioned some day.

I remember a few years back there was a huge fuss about the story of Shin the first defector from a North Korean concentration camp. I remember I even pre-ordered the book. It was his story that disappointed me. It felt forced and dry and all around meh. A few years later it was discovered, partly due to the author's own admission, that he made up parts of his story in order to appeal to readers; he was also under tremendous pressure from his editors to do so. Allegedly, most defector accounts are heavily embroidered in order to sell better in the West.

Anyway, the book I mentioned tells the story of 4 American defectors to North Korea who got stuck there for more than 40 years. Amazing story. :) There's also a documentary "Crossing the Line" -- also interesting.

Yeah I heard about Shin and how he made stuff up so I didn't buy his book. Though I read somewhere that it's expected for there to be a few inaccuracies just because of the trauma these people have endured. Hyeonseo Lee, who wrote the first book I read, didn't really suffer all that much compared to some of the others besides the death of her stepdad and being attacked in China.

Cincinnati's Coney Island by Charles J. Jacques. It's a shame that the park isn't anywhere near as exciting as it was back in its heyday (Kings Island is close enough though), but it still has one of the largest swimming pools in the world. That alone makes the park worth going to.

As I write my fanfiction I'm re-reading my earlier chapters.
Despite a little proofreading here and there I'm actually pretty good so far. :keke:
