News article on SMU

Funimation posted a new poll gauging demand not only for new anime, but also a couple old shows. A redub of Sailor Moon is one of the options. They have worked miracles with older licenses before, it's possible they could do the same with Sailor Moon. Let's have our voices heard, something has to happen eventually with SM winning all polls in my recent memory by a landslide.

Thanks! I'm excited, not only for the possibility of Sailor Moon coming back, but also for K-On and Axis Powers Hetalia.

Do they have any sway? Whatever happened to that Toei poll? I'd sure be happy if something happened.

I think dubs are worse than Hitler so obviously I don't care about this project.

But my question is would Naoko and Toei even allow Funimation to have the rights? The only benefit I could see out of this, for me, would be new merchandise I can blow my money on.

Worse than... no, dub defense mode off. Funimation does subs too, so you should care anyway. Help make the series available!

I already have the entire series subbed. Why would I care about that?

You answered your own question before you even asked it.

Because it means that potential new fans could buy the series legally and support the franchise rather then buying the bootlegs. It also means that it will no longer cost so much money for someone to buy a legit copy of the legal DVDs as well. It means Naoko will get more money, or at the very least Toei will. It means Sailor Moon will be played at anime cons again. It means that more Sailor Moon related guests could show up at cons.

Even if you don't like dubs, it is hard to see any bad points about Sailor Moon coming back. After all you can always ignore the dub and just benefit off the other stuff.

Like cheaper merchandise. No semi-popular anime has ever been released without releasing merchandise as well.

Everyone else has done the work for me, if Funimation is indicating any sway they might have, please show them interest.

I can't see them bringing up the possibility at all if they didn't have any sway. So I'm taking their poll as a sign that they do have sway of some sort that probably won't immediately be revealed.

I've never been to a con that doesn't play Sailor Moon or have a Sailor Moon panel. A con I am going to soon actually has a Sailor Moon tribute concert or something. I don't care about Sailor Moon con guests unless it's Naoko and she ain't ever going to come back. I most certainly wouldn't want to see an English VA at a con.

I don't care about the series becoming more popular. I don't care if Naoko gets more money (she isn't starving!). I don't care about someone bootlegging vs buying something legitimately. It's absolutely retarded to buy a bootleg when stuff is freely available.

The only benefit to me would a chance at more merchandise and even that isn't a huge deal to me. I have to much crap junking up my house as it is! I'd much rather see a proper translation of the Manga with the proper names.

Actually I'd rather see PGSM R or Sailor V prequel but that is neither here nor there! But really I don't want to encourage the spread of a dub for anyone or anything. Even more so if the dub continues the xenophobia and homophobia of the previous subpar trash put out by DIC and Cloverway.

But what about the Toei poll, and the Tokyopop liscencing pursuit, and the various foreign companies that want distribution rights... why haven't we heard more about those?

The last con I went to had nothing Sailor Moon related, except for a couple of keychains and a bootleg sticker page on sale.

The new dub would be totally new. They wouldn't do a DiC because, well just because. Funimation must know that the original dubs suck completely, and the point of a redub would be to rectify that.

Well we care alot about it becoming more popular, and getting better DVDs is a huge deal to me.

And no way would Funimation edit out the same-sex couples like Dic and Cloverway did, in your demonization of dubs you've failed to notice the progress they've made. The TV version of Naruto even kept acknowledgment and flashbacks of a kiss between the main character and his rival. (Though they did edit out the scene unfortunately, but it was most certainly acknowledged.) To say nothing of DVD releases, including faithful dubs of series' like gravitation. As for xenophobia, another company even included two different dubs of the untranslatable series Milk-chan, one rewritten for Americans, and one so faithful as to include every reference to Japanese celebrities.

I'd like to see a new release of the manga as well, but if you won't take the time to vote for this, at least see that there's no harm in it. Don't want to encourage dubs... honestly.

In terms of dubs improving I'd like to point out the Pretty Cure dub. It is being shown as a Saturday morning for kids show. It is also a magical girl show. While character names are changed, to the point I have seen there have been no changes in animation (other then the op and ed), the cultural stuff remains the same, so it is still set in Japan, the girls still eat takoyaki, actually it is surprising that the only real changes are the main character names and one attack being renamed from "Pretty Cure Marble Screw" to "Pretty Cure Marble Twister" (and honestly that I can understand).

One noticeable piece of dialog in the first episode that everyone thought would be removed or changed was how Nagisa was more popular with girls then boys and how she got love letters from girls. They toned it down in the dub but they still said that she was more popular with teh girls.

It would be great if we get a proper re-dub of SM regardless of who dubs it, and it would be even better if Sailor Moon becomes popular again, if that happens maybe more people [mostly those who judge against it based on only the dic dub without ever seeing the original] will stop bad mouthing it.

Guys, I don't mean to be a dub supporter or anything, but let's be serious: FUNi did the dubs to both Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist, two of, in my opinion, the greatest dubs ever. Their dubs are pretty high quality now adays, and, if they get some of their regulars (Laura Bailey as Sailor Moon!), they could do one hell of a job! ^_^

Did it, I WANT A RE-DUB SO BAD!. I enjoy dubs of anime, but the SM one really sucked.

I agree, Fullmetal Alchemist was a SUPERB dub. Brilliant voice actors, I definetly want Fun to do it.

Yeah but ironicallyish the kiss was left intact in a flash back emotional sequence when it was shown in Australia not the scene just the image XD

I just voted for the Sailor Moon redub. I would like to see the project take place - it would be more of a true dub than the DIC version, which made so many changes that it could be considered an entirely different take on the Sailor Moon series. That, and of course I would like to see a franchise revival like many of the others in this thread.

Oh my God. I would love a Sailor Moon redub. I would love to see a dub that's more faithful than DiC/Cloverway, and of course, the revival of the series.

Plus, if Funimation could get the license to the anime, it may make it easier for Tokyopop to get the license for the manga. What I wouldn't give to see a new English manga, corresponding with the reprint version, and with no mention of Arnold Schwartzenegger. :D

Knowing Tokyopop, they'd probably go all out with that project, since Sailor Moon is so popular. They would release silly merchandise such as sticker books and "ultimate editions", like with Fruits Basket. Hell, if Tokyopop could get the license, Sailor V could make an appearence in America! (I would love to see Sailor V sold in an "ultimate edition" hardcover.)

And Tokyopop and Funimation tend to work together to sell their merchandise. I've seen copies of the first DVD of an anime sold with the first volume of the manga in a cute plastic bag with a zipper. That would be so cool!

I know, I'm getting carried away. ^_^'

There is nothing wrong with being a dub supporter. ^_^ I voted but I wrote in the comments box that I would like the original voice actors back. Terri was made for Usagi.

Shame the poll has now ended and been changed.

Personally I think a redub would REALLY confuse people. I mean I still know people who think Batman Begins and Dark Knight take place before or after the original four movies.

Personally they should do Stars (that's a given) and hell, maybe a bluray release of every season subbed and with the Dic eps on there as well. No reason why not.

No matter what they do, it can only be good for Sailor Moon fandom. More activity means more new fans and reenergised old fans. Possibly means also getting the SM manga rereleased as well and maybe the peeps in Japan may be motivated to make a new series there as well!

:keke: Exactly. Dubs are way better than they used to be in the 90s. I noticed a rise in good dubs in the early 2000s. Mostly coming from ADVFilms titles. From there, a lot of companies picked up. So now, imo, it's safe to watch dubs without choking on your own vomit. ^_^'

He pointed out Fruits Basket, which Funi dubbed really nicely. I trust them with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. :keke:
